The Budapest Spring Festival awaits visitors with a programme that involves many form of arts, with events in classical music, opera, jazz and pop, world music, dance, theatre and the visual arts. With the best Hungarian performers and real world stars, the Budapest Spring Festival is a truly special occasion, presenting Hungarian and world premieres of musical and theatrical productions and co-productions with partner instututions throughout its seventeen days.

The Margaret Island Open-Air Stage, located in the shadow of the historic Art Nouveau Water Tower, is the only permanent open-air stage in Hungary and can accommodate approximately 3000 people.

The Margaret Island Open-air Stage is celebrating its renewing and the varied repertoire – premiers in opera, ballet, musical, classical and world music – and much more.

MAYFEST AT THE OPERA HOUSE

World-famous musician perform at the Budapest Opera House during the Mayfest at the Opera music festival.
The decision to build the Opera House was made in 1873. Following a public tender, the jury selected the design submitted by famed architect Miklós Ybl (1814-1891). Construction began in 1875 and, despite minor delays, was completed nine years later. The opening night – to which Emperor and King Franz Joseph was also invited – was held on 27 September 1884. The gala performance, conducted by Ferenc Erkel and his son Sándor, featured the first act of Bánk Bán, the overture from Hunyadi László and the first act from Lohengrin. Miklós Ybl’s neo-renaissance palace has remained virtually unchanged in the 130 years since and continues to attract admirers of opera and ballet alike. Each year, thousands of tourists visit the building to take in one of Budapest’s most impressive 19th century national monuments.

WAGNER IN BUDAPEST OPERA FESTIVAL

The Wagner Festival in Budapest can rightly lay claim to a monumental feat: the staging of all of Wagner’s classic operas in unique adaptations tailored to the unique properties of the Müpa concert hall. The series in 2016 include the now world-famous production of the Ring of the Nibelung tetralogy, as well as the hugely successful Meistersinger von Nürnberg. The outstanding Wagnerians regularly returning to Budapest will once again include Judit Németh, Tünde Szabóki, Iréne Theorin, Annette Dasch, Christian Franz, Gerhard Siegel and Walter Fink. BUDAPEST SUMMER FESTIVAL

Open-air theater performances, musicals, dance shows, kid’s programs and several concerts are held every summer during the Budapest Summer Festival. Programs are offered at two locations, on Margaret Island and in Városmajor. The margaret Island Open-air Stage, located in the shadow of the historic Art Nouveau water tower, is the only permanenet open-air stage in Hungary and can accommodate approximately 3000 people.
